Press release: 3/7/2001
AHRLA:
Welcome to the Egyptian Association for Human Rights!
In an important victory for human rights in Egypt, the Administrative Court ruled for the cancellation of the decision preventing the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights to register as a civil association in accordance with law number (32) for the year 1964. The ruling assured the right of the organization to legally register after 60 days without the government's intervening. The original ruling had relied (as usual) on reports from security officials.
The Association for Human Rights Legal Aid (AHRLA) would like to congratulate the Egyptian Judiciary in its adherence to the principle of justice and human rights, despite constant pressure from administrative and executive authorities.
AHRLA welcomes the Egyptian Association for Human Rights, and expresses its confidence in the effect it will have on promoting human rights activities in Egypt.
AHRLA continues to reject the law (32) of 1964 as well as its governmental and state substitute, namely law 153 of the year 1999 that was ruled unconstitutional by the Constitutional High Court. Both these set excessive restrictions on the activities and freedoms of civil society associations.
AHRLA strongly urges the Egyptian Legislator to avoid falling into the same trap while drafting the new law for civil associations, and emphasizes the need to make use of the experience and opinions of civil activists in this process.
