The National Committee for Advocating Badr El-Deen Gomaa!
A call for participation and solidarity
Within the successive developments in the lawsuit of "Mohamed Badr El-Deen Gomaa" the most terrific case of torture witnessed in Egypt during the last decade, AHRLA called for constituting a committee for advocating this case in order to practice a human right and legal pressure in the direction of achieving the justice.
AHRLA has adopting this case about eight years ago and now it is taking this step in order to let the organizations of civil society and human rights as well as the activists to take part in advocating Badr El-Deen Gomaa. The latter is considered as a model case of torture and what the Egyptian citizen can expose to at any time in the police station. Where Torturing the victim Mohamed Badr Eldin Gomaa and violating his principal Human Rights by police officers in Alexandria, beside its being a flagrant violation to all the Egyptian citizens’ Human Rights, it is not like the thousands cases of torture inside police stations in Egypt, it goes much further to represent a typical case that calls for comprehensive changes in the way the governmental institutions deal with Human in Egypt.
No doubt that the case of Mohamed Badr Eldin Gomaa shows that what the responsible officials call “police officers transgressions” had been going further to the extent of inhumanity, mass and ignorance in the authorities responsible for protecting citizens’ safety.
A simple man like Gomaa goes to the police station to report about his daughter’s absence finds himself charged with murdering her and in addition being exposed to all kinds of torture forcing him to confess the murder (!!)
The big scandal and the distinguishing sign of negligence and dishonesty is that he went to the same police station which the absent girl was delivered in by someone found her in the street and from the same police station also, she was sent to the juvenile girls institution as the only procedure could be taken in that situation (!!) beside being the same police station it might be possible (ironically enough) to be the same police officer who received the two reports, the report of finding a lost girl and the report of an absent girl(!!)
Unfortunately, for the officers, the girl escaped from the institution and went to her mother who took her to the police station aiming at proving Gomaa’s innocence, but the officers covered their mistake by another one, by detaining the mother and the child inside the police station to hide their crime.
Fortunately, for the Egyptian citizens this time, there is a fair judiciary in Egypt, that can discover the whole truth and the several trials to mislead justice, the court orders the general prosecution to investigate with the police officers in the crimes they had committed, crimes of torture and fabricating charges.
Many of human rights activists and lawyers have recently joint this committee and now AHRLA is seeking for lobbing in this direction for providing an honoring and practical model on the possibility of solidarity in order to reach and attain the real human rights on grounds as well as confronting the phenomenon of torture and maltreatment that become a dominant method in the police stations.
It is worthy mentioning that the Prosecutor General has brought 12 of the police men before the criminal court under accusation of torturing and fabricating the accusations to Badr El-Deen. AHRLA has issued a press release in 15/9/2003 on this occasion included the names of the officers involved in this case. This press release has effected the public opinion and returned the case to the social scene again after it was forgot under the repeated postponing of the trial.
In this respect, AHRLA calls every one can be interested in resisting the torture and maltreatment in the police stations to communicate with the staff in order to gain all the documents and legal files related to this case and also to join the committee settled for achieving this aim on grounds through a collective action.
